Hejhej New Chalmerist and hopefully new friend of ours (mine especially, I am awesome you won’t regret it )
A few words about me…just a simple Greek Goddess…ehm sorry, Greek student, coming from the beautiful Thessaloniki. I am doing my Master studies at Chalmers and I am enrolled in the Complex Adaptive Systems program.
I have been living in Gothenburg since August 2014 and from the very first moment I came in touch with CIRC I realized how great it is to be a part of this big international family.
Being a part of our family means…You learn, taste, feel, listen, travel (…and the list goes on…) and live in many different countries all in once. How Great is That! The experiences I’ve had, the friends I have made and the things I have done during the last year cannot be expressed in a simple text…so please, join us and find out yourself. YES, now it’s YOUR time WELCOME

I take care to keep the smile on my face all the time and enjoy every moment. You can say I’m crazy and adventurous with both feet on the ground…Boredom is my enemy and party is my second name Meeting new people is my love and travelling is my addiction!
I’m super happy to be a part of an amazing CIRC group and excited to be there for you guys If you ever feel lonely, upset, frustrated, delighted, happy or you’re in other weird state of mind, please do not hesitate to drag me for a small chit- chat

From the hot lands of South America and the caribbean sea, I am “la chica latina” of CIRC!. I have a very dark sense of humor and might not be the person who you want to mess around with; but I am definitely a loyal friend, I enjoy making people laugh (with random jokes) and have a good time in general!
I am the person who’s trying to match you with an awesome guide/mentor to help you find friends and your way in your first days here in Gothenburg (feel free to email me if something goes wrong with your Phadder, I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again, “tan tan taaan” sound).
Since I arrived here, I have been exploring and trying out different things, cultures and attending to as many events as possible, so I never get bored in this city (it’s a fact)!. Hence, if you ever want to know what’s happening in Goteborg, what’s the next big event, what can you do or where can you go if you want to try a new sport, cultural activities, explore a new place or do something random, I am the person who you should contact!
Ps: easily bribed with chocolate ice-cream!

Hej! I am a fourth year civil engineering student. I grew up in Linköping, Sweden. After one exchange year abroad I realized how fun it is to spend time with international students. The first thing I did, after coming back to Sweden, was to sign up as a phadder. Now this year I am happy to be part of the CIRC board. I have enjoyed every second of my time with the CIRC community…and I hope you will too!!
During your time at Chalmers you will most likely spend some late nights studying. But luckily you will also have the opportunity meet and make new friends. With them you can dance the night away at the fun parties on campus. Do the crazy slide down the Olga-stairs in a bread basket or dine in the student train wagon. Last but not the least basking in the sauna or sharing a fika with new friends will give you a cherished time. You will have a blast! Welcome to Sweden and welcome to Chalmers!

Hej! I’m 24 years old and come from an island a tenth the size of Sweden but almost equally populated, the Dominican Republic. I spent quite a while obsessed over Sweden before coming here, so you will usually see me very enthusiastic about trying swedish food and participating in traditions. I really like visiting new places and being exposed to the differences in culture and perspectives of people around me. Something that I always carry with me is the thirst for answers, either obtaining them or providing them. Those are the reasons why I joined CIRC; new students coming from different cultures usually have lots of questions!
I’m really looking forward to meet all of you and to be of help to you however it’s possible
I’m also a Chalmers Student Ambassador.

I come from the famous city Lahore which is known for its culture, cuisine, history and hospitality. I absolutely love food; it always brings out a big beaming smile on my face. No matter how fancy your party is, it all goes down the drain if the food is not good enough. I am very fond of outdoor activites like hiking, jogging and am very passionate about cricket. I assure you that being at Chalmers would be one of the most memorable experiences of your life! Looking forward to welcoming new and interesting people in 2014! “Coming from a very different culture in pursue of discovering other styles of living and more opportunities in studying computer security, I ended up in Sweden and Chalmers. I am highly motivated to satisfy my interest in getting to know new people. That’s why I make lots of friends where ever I go and I always remember their experiences as they have been mine. I have gained a lot of experiences by working in variety of fields such as journalism, translation, marketing, IT, Teaching English, physics, mathematics, Computer programming, … But I never get enough of learning about different people. Chalmers and specially CIRC is definitely the best place to get to know hundreds of students having very different backgrounds and trying to help them as much as I can. I am made to help people and experience new aspects of life with them while learning many new things. Chalmers is a great place that provides a wonderful atmosphere for having fun at the same time as studying. It’s hard to feel bored during your time in Chalmers. We, all the CIRC members are here to welcome all of you new international students in Chalmers with interesting activities and help you to be integrated with your new exciting environment as soon as possible.”

I arrived to Sweden on 15th September 2008. When I reached Chalmers it was the last day of enrolment and only two hours were left and I made it right on time. I joined CIRC after one year of education in Chalmers and I am serving in CIRC 2010 as a Secretary. I like to spend time with my friends and to travel. I have travelled few countries in Europe and in Asia all by road. Studying in Chalmers no doubt is one of the best experiences of my life. I got a chance to meet with different cultures and make new friends from all around the world. “Born and raised in Hudiksvall, which is situated near the geographical middle of Sweden, I first got intrigued by Gothenburg during the last years of high school. Before that I was certain that Stockholm would be the place for my continued studies. However, as you can see, the city took hold of me and at the end of high school I knew for sure where I was heading. Outside of school I like to do all kinds of stuff, be it skiing, sailing, playing guitar or watching a movie with friends. I also try to get some exercise (which isn’t entirely easy when you are a few assignments behind in math/mechanics/programming or whatever). The reason I got into CIRC was because of the unrivaled opportunity to meet and learn about other cultures, as well as actually get to speak some of the languages you’ve studied for years but never really used.”

I joined Chalmers in 2008 in the Master’s program of communication engineering. By nature I used to be a calm and quiet person, usually I take time to socialize although now CIRC making me able break these habits. Travelling, learning new languages was always fun for me. Being a CIRC member I am enjoying diversity of different cultures and languages. Gothenburg is having fairly peaceful environment and natives. Organizing and participating in events are quite helpful to balance the life in the calm environment of City.”

“Raised in the ancient, culturally rich, really hot and extremely large city of Cairo, completed my B.Sc. degree from the German University in Cairo, with the exception of one semester in Stuttgart, Germany, and currently pursuing my Master studies in Material Sciences at Chalmers. My hobbies include traveling, reading and meeting new people.
I first came to Sweden by the end of August 2009 knowing very little about Sweden, the culture and absolutely nobody. I know exactly how it feels to be away from your country, family, friends and all the things you love. But it only took me few days thanks to CIRC’09 team to have a circle of friends still growing until now. At first, it took me sometime to learn and get used to the system in Sweden, and I’m willing to pass the knowledge and help new students accommodating.
Our mission is to help you have fun but most of all to build friendships. I think I’m fully confident when I say that you can always count on us, either myself or any of the other team members, we will be there for you.”

My first days in Göteborg, I meet a lot of international students through the CIRC activities, made some awesome good friends. Since then I am enjoying the European culture and been traveling every now and then with my friends. If you see a big group of multinational people having lunch together in the Chalmers student union, well you know where to find me! I love to paint, travel, cooking and love to bug my friends. Göteborg is a beautiful place to continue your studies. It offers a lot of activities all around the city, and you will enjoy the most of it if you have a bunch of nice friends to share the moments with. In this case CIRC will be there for you, hope you find some nice friends during the reception period. Welcome to Chalmers!”

“Hi, there! I’m from a small town in the southern parts of Sweden, but since a year I live here in Gothenburg, probably the friendliest city in Sweden. And Chalmers is, in my opinion of course, the best university. So I think it’s in its place to congratulate you for coming to this awesome city!
One thing you might notice about me is that the mood I’m in tend to be dependant on the weather, like it is to many swedes. I love the sun, and there’s nothing better than to take walks, have picnics and barbecues and do sports in the sunshine, after the long cold swedish winter.
I really enjoy meeting people from different cultures and backgrounds, and getting to know their views on life and their societies. And so, I love to travel! Though I usually want to see new places when i travel, there is one place I always go back to…the Alps. Perhaps because skiing is among the things I love most in life. There’s something about strapping things to your feet that will glide or roll that just makes me feel boyishly happy! I’m sure you’re gonna have a good time here in Sweden! See you around!”

Apart from “phaddering”, I love music, singing, my violin, making friends, meeting people, helping them, learning about languages, customs and cultures, food, movies, space science, and so many other things I cannot even imagine about beginning to finish my list! People know me as someone who is always smiling and having a good time. I joined CIRC, because this is where I can put all of my energy, skills and experience to help those who really need help. It gives me immense satisfaction in putting a smile on the face of a student and I thank CIRC ’09 for having given me the opportunity to do so everyday for the next one year. I am from the capital of Bavaria, the part of Germany which is responsible for 91% of all wider held German stereotypes and 100% of the annoying, inaccurate ones. And I try my very best to keep all of them up. I never cross the street while the red man shows up, I eat Sauerkraut for breakfast, lunch and dinner and I hate this fluffy, sweet stuff they call bread in Sweden. Born and raised in Manhattan, NYC, I came to Sweden in the hopes of finding my bride, but instead found a Master’s Program. Woops…. I guess that’s what happens with stereotypical Americans. With a dual citizenship (Swedish being the other), I get all the wonderful privileges of a Swede and all the downfalls of an International Student (Can’t speak a word of Swedish… So ashamed). But that hasn’t stopped me!! I’m the local CIRC drinker and the loudest member you’ll probably meet. Sorry but New York isn’t as quiet as it is here in Gothenburg. I’m what they call an Enigma, both a geek and a socialite at heart. Stick with me, and you’ll have a great time!

All good things come in threes. I’m the third german in CIRC also coming from the “Ruhr area” and was the last member joining this fancy committee. A couple of years back during my Erasmus in the north this wonderful country I figured out: Sweden is a pretty awesome and Chalmers the best place to study engineering! Hence I ended up in Göteborg. I would describe myself as easygoing and open minded. My advice to the new students, take the chance to travel Sweden, get in touch with swedish people and culture. There is no time to waste on experiencing the new, the unknown. All the things you’ll have done, all the lessons you may have learned can’t be taken from you afterwards.

Whenever someone asked me, where I’m from I say the truth. But this can be very disappointing because apart from a Chinese and Indian guy nobody knows where I’m from. Thereby Bochum is in the centre of the wonderful Ruhr Region. Only here trees grow out of old industry chimneys and people call it art. Only in the Area Ruhr
People are so ironic to call a crawling motorway “Ruhr Fast Way” including the worlds longest parking lot which leads you in between “hills” that consist of trash or rocks from coal mines.

A Sudanese, coming from Dubai. From the amazing beaches to jumping into an ice hole, immediately after using the sauna. Well, it was a hell crazy thing to do ! Trust me it was fun. Why Sweden? My answer is I’m a traveler! My advice to new students thinking about studying abroad is to prepare carefully, establish a social network. And be motivated. It helps to learn the language, even though most people in Sweden speak good English. But most importantly, I believe it is essential to adjust your expectations to the current situation. And it helps to know that Swedes are not as cold as they may first seem.

So, allow me to tell you a story.
“There was this Portuguese dude from Porto that likes to challenge himself and that, pretty much like you, decided to get out of his comfort zone and travel some thousands of km (2.354 to be precise) towards the unknown town of Göteborg and to live there for a thousand days.
Upon arrival, a warm welcome was expecting him. This bunch of yellow t-shirt villagers – whom the natives call “phadders” – led by a bunch of blue pants elders known as “CIRC”, prepared a bunch of stuff for him and his fellow travellers: feasts and activities, tours on the surroundings, lessons on the ancient art of being Svenska, and – the most important for him – prevented him from feeling homesick.
Half a year and many experiences later, this guy decided to join the elder tribe and to make an attempt on providing the same (or better) experiences to the new newcomers.”
Will he and his tribe fellows succeed? Can you help me finding out?

I wanted to take myself out of my comfortable and familiar life and put myself in a place that would help me have whole new experiences. My first few weeks in Sweden, which could’ve either been awful or awesome, turned out to be really awe some thanks to the warm welcome I got from CIRC. I joined CIRC because I wanted to be able to give back what I got out of CIRC and more. I’m excited about having new experiences and trying new and sometimes, outrageous things. I am known to be impulsive, have no constant likes, and I’m in love with something new every day

My name is David. I study first year at the Master programme in Nuclear Engineering at Chalmers. Before that I was studying Mechanical Engineering at Lund University in the south of Sweden. This part of Sweden is also where I come from. As a new master student at Chalmers (although not international) I participated in the activities of CIRC to make some new friends and get to now a place that was (almost) completely new for me. I found this interesting, especially meeting people from other countries and I did get to know that they where recruiting new people for the committee as they do every autumn. So I felt that this is something that I want to do (which I still feel today) and got elected for the treasurer place. So if you feel that you want to be a part of CIRC you could either be a phadder for the autumn reception (recruitment this spring) or/and be in the board of CIRC (recruitment next autumn).

I moved to Sweden cause I wanted an international education and to learn new languages. At the time I was a new student here in Chalmers CIRC took care of me and thank to it I met a lot of friends.
So I decided to take part of it so I can teach what I had been taught. Since then I have been learning a lot. This is a great experience for expanding your knowledge and being helpful for someone. I am very interested in science and photography. You will probably see me around the campus with my camera in my hands . I do like music as well, I actually used to play the bass guitar in several bands with different genres. I do computer gaming and if you don’t find me in campus you probably may find me playing online on Steam (add me if you want mr_krova). I like talking to people and listening to their stories. I think everybody has got a story to tell. So if you meet me around stop me or feel free to visit us at CIRC office! We could have a “fika” together .
So guys and girls you are very welcome to Chalmers university and I hope you will enjoy CIRC as much as I do!!!!!11!!1!!!10one0101!!11eleven!!1!!1100!”

About me? When I moved to Sweden I loved everything about it. My first few months was not just comfortable, they were as good as the best times I had ever had. I am sure my experience have been great because of the people I have met and my friends. They are always there to help me, talk to me (listen to me talk as well), to do things together, to party and to explore Chalmers and Göteborg! I intend to recreate this experience for every student who comes to Chalmers. Something about myself, I am studying Product Development in the Mechanical section and I enjoy it very much. I enjoy spending time with friends, watching or playing sports, cooking and going out. Confession: I have often thought that I know more than what I actually do! And it makes me very happy to share whatever I know. (which sometimes is not even helpful to the other person!) I am very excited to meet the new Chalmerists! During that time, I also taught English, mathematics and Hindi to visually challenged children. Here at CIRC 2011 I am the President. Apart from “CIRCing”, I love music, singing, my violin, making friends, meeting people, helping them, learning about languages, customs and cultures, food, movies, space science, and the list is so long that I cannot even imagine beginning to finish it! People know me as someone who is always smiling and having a good time. I joined CIRC, because this is where I can put all of my energy, skills and experience to help those who really need help. It gives me immense satisfaction in putting a smile on the face of someone and I thank CIRC 2010 for having given me the opportunity to do so everyday for the next one year. So if you need anything do not hesitate to contact any of us at CIRC. We are here to help you!”

“I am a 2nd Year bachelor student at Automation and Mechatronics at Chalmers. I like to travel and have been most in Japan and Spain, but also Cuba, Guatemala, USA, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore among others. I joined CIRC to be able to meet people and learn about different cultures and languages. I hope you all will like Sweden and the (maybe quite unusual) way Swedish people are. Welcome to Sweden.”

Department: Architecture
Nationality: Serbian
Languages: Serbian (Croatian, Bosnian, Montenegrin), English, Spanish, Russian
“Hej everybody, my name is Ivana and I am from Belgrade, capital city of Serbia. I came to Sweden sometime during August 2010 and had a lot of help from CIRC during first couple of weeks. This is, I guess the main reason why I decided to join the team this year (surely, it wasn’t because of the uniform). As it happens, I have a lot of hidden talents, which I cannot speak about. All you need to know is “if there is something to be done, ask me. I cannot lift more than 20kg but I can do some other stuff. What else, what else? I enjoy nice weather and sun, going for long walks, playing computer games, being a nerd, shopping, reading, to draw and paint, say blah blah when I find something boring and so on. To keep this short, I am open to almost any new experience and culturally different thing, as long as it is fun and interesting. See you around!”
Daniela Farias
Role: Webmaster
Department: Architecture – Msc. Design for Sustainable Development
Nationality: Brazilian
Languages: Portuguese, English and soon Swedish!
“I’m Dani and I’m brazilian! (No, I can’t dance or play football, so don’t bother asking.) I’m an architect taking a master’s in Design for Sustainable Development here at Chalmers, so I spend most of my day locked inside the A building with all those other poor and crazy zombies. I joined CIRC because I loved to be able to make friends soon after arriving in Sweden (heck, in fact even before!), and that made me feel very welcome. I want everybody to feel the same! I’m also famous for being a HUGE nerd, and that’s why they made me the webmaster of the group. My passions are gadgets, games and music. So yeah, if something is broken (or if you just want to discuss Android x iOS or play Team Fortress 2), poke me. ”
